When you have fully matriculated as a student at Yonsei University, one of the first things you would need to do is to request for your Student ID (SID) card. After you have received your SID, it is actually possible for you to connect it to your Woori bank account, and thereafter use it as a substitute for your ATM / cheque card.
How to connect your Student ID card to your Woori bank account:
It's as simple as that! You will now be able to use your Student ID to pay from your bank account at most places (generally works on campus, though at some places, it doesn't always work, so it's good to have an ATM card from the bank too), as well as do things such as draw cash and make transfers using the machines.
One of the first things to do when you arrive in Korea is to create a bank account which can be used locally. There are a few big Korean banks which most people use, eg. Hana Bank, KEB Bank, and Woori Bank. However, most international students in Yonsei use Woori Bank, as it has discounted rates for overseas remittances, and its ATM machines are readily available on campus. Furthermore, physical branches are easily accessible on both the Songdo and Sinchon campuses.
To create a Woori bank account:
It is strongly advised for you to go with a Korean friend, as not all the staff are able to communicate in English fluently. However, the staff from the branches on campus often have sufficient experience handling international students and will be able to help you even if you are going alone, so do not worry (:
